My First Blog Post

Hello! I’ve been thinking about making a blog for almost two years now and I’ve finally done it. I feel like in the graphic design and marketing field, there is SO much content out there - so much to learn and be inspired by. However, I feel like the amount of content I consume can be overwhelming and I often compare my skill set to the talent of others. There is so much I want to learn but not enough time being someone who works full time while simultaneously trying to build my portfolio. How am I going to combat this problem? A BLOG

It is super common, more often than not in my opinion, for graphic designers to teach themselves their skill set rather than learning how to use software and code throughout university. As someone who earned a minor in graphic design, I can testify that my classmates and I basically taught ourselves the tools we needed to design the projects we wanted to create. While our professors provided us with guidance and feedback, it felt like I would leave class and spend countless hours looking up YouTube tutorials on how to do a specific action on Adobe. One of the many purposes of my blog is to document my experience while I teach myself new skills within the field. This won’t be just something I can look back on and refer to, but I think writing and reflecting on my learning processes will help me better understand and retain the information I consume. Additionally, maybe I could even encourage people to teach themselves things they are curious about too(that would be super cool).

As a designer, we have so many online platforms to turn to for inspiration and it sometimes seems like everything has been done before. As I create Pinterest boards, save hundreds of pins, and like tons of graphics on Behance, I want to write about what I like about the content I am drawn to. I want to find inspiration from the outside world, the real world, and bring that into my work. I consider my blog to be a hub of all my thoughts as a designer, observer, and human.

Lastly, I think making a blog is a fun way to show my commitment to the field! A job in graphic design usually doesn’t just entail creating graphics and making things look nice - many roles require designers to have knowledge of content creation across many platforms. I feel like documenting my experiences is a creative way to show my personality and serves as good practice in creating quality, individualized content.

Instead of going on and on about what I am going to do with this blog, I’m just going to start writing about what I am doing! Stay tuned.
